The difference between
Loxone & KNX

Loxone and KNX – both are systems for the automation or control of technical equipment in buildings of all kinds. Whether in hotels, commercial buildings, restaurants or single-family homes. And both systems have their strengths.

We have compared the basic differences between Loxone and KNX for you, to clarify the question of whether a decision for or against a system is necessary at all.

Differences between Loxone & KNX

Loxone KNX
Loxone is a manufacturer of software and hardware, which offers complete solutions in the field of building automation. KNX is a protocol/field bus, for which a wide range of manufacturers offer suitable sensors, actuators and software.
Openness

Thanks to the numerous interfaces, it is possible to use a wide range of standards (e.g. KNX, DALI, Modbus RTU/TCP, EnOcean, RS485/RS232, DMX and many more).

Furthermore, Loxone is officially certified by Apple HomeKit, Bosch-Siemens, Belimo and other manufacturers.

KNX is an open protocol. Various manufacturers offer numerous products for KNX installations.
Scalability Your Loxone project is freely scalable, regardless of whether it is a commercial building or a detached house. Thanks to the client gateway solution, several Miniservers can work in a network together, and they can even work together across locations. You can scale a KNX system relatively freely depending on the area of application, desired functionality and scope. If you have installed 64 connections and want more, you will need another power supply for another 64 connections. And in order to couple these two, you need a further extra power supply.
Intelligence The Miniserver is the central element of any Loxone home or building automation installation. Essentially co-ordinating the control and automation via local processing of logic.

The intelligence of the KNX system is located directly in the actuators and sensors.

Visualisation The app visualisation is created automatically as the system is programmed, and it is completely free of charge. In order to obtain a visual representation of the building automation, an additional programming effort is required. Additional hardware, for which a fee is charged, is also required here.
Software With Loxone, the entire Software and all apps are available free of charge and licence-free – including free updates and free external access. The ETS software for the realisation of KNX projects is subject to a charge. If an update of the software is necessary, you must order this again for a fee.
Configuration / Programming Configuration is quick and easy with Loxone Config. From 250+ pre-programmed Function Blocks to the Auto-Config feature (with which an entire project is pre-configured in just a few clicks of the mouse) through to the freedom to create individual extensive logic, meaning that pretty much anything is possible. Programming in the ETS software is usually complex and time-consuming. Furthermore, the programming of components from different manufacturers can differ greatly.

Use Loxone & KNX together

The good news for you is that you don’t have to choose one or the other. Even despite all their differences, thanks to the openness of the Loxone system, the advantages of both solutions can be combined.

This can be done by adding a Loxone Miniserver to your KNX installations, which allows you to gain the benefit of Loxone’s market leading visualisations, to be used for a KNX install. Thanks to 250+ pre-programmed Function Blocks, you can quickly and easily realise extensive logic – plus if you have any questions, our local Partner Coaching team will be there to support you in implementation!

Loxone Config: The intuitive configuration tool – also for your KNX projects

Be inspired by Loxone’s intuitive and powerful programming interface and use it for your KNX projects – the app visualisation is created simultaneously as the system is configured, and is fully automatic. Meaning configuration for the installer and creating the subsequent visualisation for the user has never been so easy!

With each KNX Extension, up to 500 KNX/EIB group addresses can be integrated quickly and easily. Numerous other Extensions offer interfaces for almost every application. Including 1-Wire, DMX, DALI, RS485 and many more.

KNX Extension

Thanks to the Loxone KNX Extension, you can easily integrate devices with a KNX interface into your Loxone installation. With Loxone Config, KNX sensors and actuators can be paired and configured.
