Admont Abbey
The Benedictine monastery of Admont was founded in 1074 and is the oldest active monastery in Styria. With over 70,000 book volumes, Admont Abbey is known as the world’s largest abbey library. Loxone technology controls the lighting in the museum and precisely measures the indoor climate to protect the priceless books.
What was implemented?
In the first phase of the project, the focus was on the Lighting control set throughout the museum. With the exhibition area of the museum landscape being very large, this is no mean feat, as it corresponds to the size of about 36 single-family homes.
The second part of the implementation dealt with the humidity and temperature monitoring of the world’s largest monastery library. Loxone is perfect for this.
Plus cabling was not possible in some cases, so it was decided that some Loxone Air Technology would be used here. Thanks to the flexibility of the Loxone system, further functions can be implemented in the library at any time.

Museum lighting
In Admont Monastery, the large museum extends over three floors and two wings. In the first phase of the project, the Lighting structure for the entire museum was brought into the Loxone system via DALI. This was all thanks to the openness of Loxone’s interfaces.
Humidity and temperature monitoring
Due to the size and construction of the building, the climatic conditions change very slowly and only gradually over time. But the right Indoor climate is particularly important here as it is the world’s largest abbey library. Meaning that it is so important to monitor the rooms conditions at all times, as this is the only way to preserve the precious volumes and documents here. The Room Comfort Sensor takes over the exact recordings of temperature and humidity, which thus helps to protect the 70,000+ pieces of literature.
The measurement data is also used for scientific purposes and so is therefore required to be forwarded to another location – which is easy with Loxone. Currently, Christian Kovacs, an employee of Loxone Partner Johann Reinalter KG, is busy answering this challenge and making sure that Loxone perfectly looks after the Abbey’s needs.
What clients & partners say about the project
“Above all, it was important to protect the precious volumes of the world’s largest monastery library. The Loxone system records the temperature and humidity monitoring data. Wiring was not possible. Loxone provided the best solution here with the Loxone Air technology.”
