The Loxone Smart Home – The System with Endless Interfaces

10th February 2015 in Technology

The Loxone System was developed to link all the electrical islands in a home and integrate them via the Loxone Miniserver, the core of the Loxone Smart Home. To make this possible the system has (almost) endless interfaces, that allows it integrate other systems or electrical devices to a large functional whole! Dumb devices will be upgraded to useful components through the intelligence of the Miniserver.

The Miniserver itself is equipped with:

  • a LAN interface
Every network-compatible device e.g. a TV, multiroom audio device,… can be centrally controlled by the Miniserver
  • a KNX interface
KNX is an international standard of a complex home and building control
  • several analog and digital in- and outputs
    to link actuators and sensors
  • the Loxone Link
The Loxone Link is the interface to extend the functionality of the Loxone Smart Home. Other standards can be integrated in the Loxone Smart Home with the Loxone Extensions that act as interfaces for:

Infrared

Infrared technology comes standard in many devices. TVs, projectors, DVD-players, music systems, air conditioning units and many other things are controlled remotely with infrared. Our IR extension allows you to control all these devices with your Loxone system.

RS232 and RS485

Established for decades these interfaces have been a reliable way to transfer data. You can find an RS232 or RS485 interface on many electronic devices such as televisions, music systems, devices for opening garage doors, ventilation and heating systems, etc. With the Loxone Miniserver, these devices can be controlled with simple commands to switch on/off, configure or read out information.

Modbus

Is a method used for transmitting information over serial lines between electronic devices. Our Modbus Extension can be hooked up to anything with a Modbus Interface. This allows you to receive data transmission and incorporate your utilities meter reading, such as gas, water and energy consumption, into your Smart Home.

DMX

DMX enables communication and data transmission for lights. It’s how information (e.g. about dimming levels, color, or light position) is sent from the DMX controller to the lights. With the Loxone DMX Entension connected directly to the Miniserver, it takes on control and provides intelligence to the system for features such as timer switches and daylight control.

1-Wire

Allowing for enough sensors to measure temperature and access, the 1-Wire Extension is perfect for any installation where multiple 1-Wire Sensors are required. Up to 20 sensors can be connected to the 1-Wire Extension and the Loxone Miniserver can connect up to 30 1-Wire Extensions without it affecting your systems performance.
