Is Loxone an open or closed system?
Is Loxone an open or closed system? A Google or AI search doesn’t get us any closer to the right answer, as literally every website says something different. So what is the truth?
We will start with a spoiler: as is usually the case, the truth lies somewhere in the middle. In some respects we are a closed system and in others we are open. What does this mean for installers and for end users? Let’s take a closer look at this.
A closed system is a security and quality guarantee
Our highest priority is to provide absolute security over Loxone user data. This is why our system does not work through the cloud, and all information remains in the Miniserver. The more closed the system is, the less likely it is that external factors will adversely affect its security.
Furthermore, our aim is to offer customers a comprehensive system, realised from A to Z with Loxone components. This ensures a stable and efficient environment that performs its tasks without any hindrance. The quality of the products we offer is carefully controlled, ensuring that we offer the best to our customers. We have an in-depth understanding of the relationships between specific components, so we know how to solve any problems or add new features.
The harmony of the Loxone ecosystem guarantees users a consistent, seamless solution. However, our customers already have certain devices in the home, as well as specific preferences for how they want their home or commercial property to look. Therefore, we are not a completely closed system as we want to facilitate integrating these devices and preferences into customers installations.
Openness is a driving force behind innovation
We are somewhat limited in what we can offer our customers. We are not (at least not yet) a manufacturer of fans, household appliances or inverters. There are many companies that have been doing this for decades and have earned the trust of millions of users.
At Loxone, we believe in quality. Our components are extensively tested and 100% manufactured in european countries. The same idea guides us when we decide to enable the cooperation of our system with third-party devices, so among our strategic partners you will find brands that have global recognition – Miele, Fronius, Bosch or Tesla are a guarantee of quality (the full list of supported devices can be found here). By opening up the Loxone system to cooperation with components from these brands, we can be sure that our customers can rely on them to ensure that their whole building works perfectly. This means that both installers and end users can personalise their project and tailor them to their own custom needs.
Loxone is a forward-thinking company that wants to grow, change the world and innovate the way we live. We adapt to the needs of our customers and partners; however, we do so in a controlled manner, without sacrificing the values we have nurtured from our founding.
A hybrid that blurs the boundaries between open and closed
So what is the conclusion? Loxone is a hybrid which, on the one hand, offers users a secure and
rigorously tested high-quality experience. On the other hand, however, we cannot expect everyone to complete their project using just Loxone hardware on its own – forgoing devices that we do not offer.
What does this mean for end users? They gain the ability to personalise their system and receive an installation that meets their needs and expectations. At the same time, they receive a guarantee of quality and the confidence that they have purchased a top-of-the-range solution that does not compromise the security of their data or the functioning of the building as a whole.
What does this mean for Installers? They gain an invaluable opportunity to offer customers a bespoke solution. If they feel that one device will work better than another for a particular project, they have the opportunity to realise the installation as they see fit. Using the capabilities of Loxone and other manufacturers, they can go further and create innovative and creative custom solutions. With the sum of the parts being brought together providing more than using them separately. Loxone provides the overarching, holistic powerful interface to make this happen.
