Inside an intelligent fairytale library: Stift Admont

The Benedictine Monastery of Admont, called “Stift Admont” was founded in 1074 and is the oldest still existing monastery in Styria. With over 70,000 volumes, Stift Admont is known as the world’s largest monastery library. Loxone technology controls the lighting in the huge museum and measures the indoor climate precisely to protect the monastery’s priceless books.

What was implemented?

During the first stage of the project, intelligent lighting control was installed throughout the museum. Fun fact: the museum’s exhibition area corresponds to the size of about 36 single-family houses.

Next, the world’s largest monastery library was equipped with humidity and temperature monitoring using Loxone to protect the valueable books and interior.

Since wiring was not possible at times, the Loxone Air technology was used. Thanks to the flexibility of the Loxone system, further features can be implemented in the  library at the Admont monastery at any time.

Lighting in the museum

In Stift Admont, the large museum extends over three floors and two tracts. In the first project phase, the lighting structure for the entire museum was integrated into the Loxone system via Dali. Thanks to the interface openness of Loxone, this was no problem.

Humidity and temperature monitoring

Due to the size and construction of the building, the climatic conditions only change very slightly and slowly. However, the appropriate indoor climate is particularly important in the world’s largest monastery library. This is the only way to preserve the precious volumes and written documents. The room comfort sensor takes over the exact determination of temperature as well as humidity and thus helps with the protection of the 70,000 books.

The measurement data is also used for scientific purposes and should therefore be transferred to a further location. Currently Christian Kovacs, employee of Loxone partner Johann Reinalter KG, is engaged in the realization of this challenge.

What do customer & partner have to say about the project?

“Above all, it was essential that the precious volumes of the world’s largest monastery library are protected. The Loxone system records the temperature and humidity monitoring data. Wiring was not possible. Loxone provided the best solution in this case with the Loxone Air technology.”
