As the seasons change, the days become shorter and daylight becomes less frequent. This makes it more important to create a pleasant lighting atmosphere that increases well-being and productivity. Daylight control automatically adjusts the lighting to the natural course of the day. In this edition of Loxone Explained, you will learn how this technology can be used optimally during the colder months.

Intelligent lighting for well-being and productivity

Having the right lighting has a major impact on our well-being and performance, especially on dark autumn and winter days. In the morning and evening, soft and warm light creates a relaxed atmosphere, while at midday, brighter light ensures concentration and alertness.

This adjustment, also known as Human Centric Lighting (HCL), simulates the natural course of daylight. Daylight control has a positive effect in offices, care and healthcare facilities, as well as in private homes. Employees stay focused and awake, patients recover faster, and at home, simulated daylight control offers well-being and comfort.

How color temperatures affect our well-being

Light colors such as warm white, blue and red have specific effects on our well-being and productivity. Early in the morning, warm white light (approx. 2700K) has a calming effect. Over the course of the day, the proportion of blue in the light increases (neutral white 3300-5300K, daylight white from 5300K), which promotes concentration and alertness. In the evening, red light prepares the body for rest and sleep.

The frequency of the light also influences its effect on us. Light containing blue has shorter wavelengths and a higher frequency, which makes us more alert and focused.

Warm white light, on the other hand, has longer wavelengths and has a calming effect, as the body begins to produce the “sleep hormone” melatonin as soon as blue light is no longer present. This is why it is more difficult to fall asleep if you are on your cell phone, laptop or TV before going to sleep.

Artificial daylight control compared to natural daylight shows the progression of the color frequency over the course of the day. Warm red light at sunrise, cold blue light during the day and warm red light again in the evening.

Loxone’s intelligent lighting control simulates the natural course of daylight. This creates a pleasant lighting atmosphere that increases well-being and productivity, especially in the darker autumn and winter months.
